I'm bringing my Hungry Photographer food blog back to life today. Today I'm at "Sakura" Sushi & Bar located right off 57th Ave in West MiamiThis is not your run of the mill sushi joint, it's a smaller sushi restaurant sporting fresh fish, warm sake, and the best speciality rolls only found in West Miami. I have never heard of some of the rolls they offer here, such as "The Lebron" under the special rolls, this is a Crab and Shrimp Tempura Roll, topped with fresh tuna, fresh salmon, special garlic mayo sauce and eel sauce. Sounds great when your rooting for the Heat!
Tuna Tataki from the appetizer menu
I joined a South Florida local SUP, Surfer and Sushi Connoisseur at his local Sushi joint to try a roll named after him. Now keep in mind that I'm fully loaded with sushi and sake as I write this. I have been to Sakura a few times, but not as much as my friend Carlos. His roll if you guessed already (you don't win anything) is called the "Carlos Roll". This is a Tuna roll, with crunchy wakame (seaweed) salad, special spicy (JC) sauce and cream cheese - Rice outside. Once you take a bite of this roll you immediately get the crunch from the wakame and the creaminess of the cream cheese. I'm told the JC sauce is a house made spicy ponzu sauce, adding a kick to this roll. Carlos says this roll is just like him. I'm already filled with sake so I pretend not to hear that.
On top of that I order another roll he is collaborating on called the TNT Roll. This roll is also with fresh tuna, fresh wasabi, special spicy (JC) sauce, shiracha, diced jalapeño with seed, spicy ponzu sauce, inside out with tuna tataki, spicy mayo, red pepper flakes, and fried sweet potato on top. If your into having a firecracker in your mouth this one is for you. It starts off cool and fresh, then takes a turn when it lights up in your mouth, the chili peppers flakes on top keep the heat on, until there is not enough sake to put the fire out. It has the levels of fire, once you get to the top you might need to call the fire department. No, I'm just kidding, but it wouldn't hurt to share this roll with your fellow buds.
Now that Carlos took the limelight, I ordered a third roll. This one caught my eye only cause I just saw the most recent Godzilla movie. You guessed it, its the "Godzilla" roll found in the deep fried roll section of the menu. This roll contains salmon, crab, eel, cream cheese, avocado and masago, breaded and deep fried with eel sauce. At first look you wonder if Godzilla would actually look so tasty inside if you cut him into slices. The fried outside looks like lizard skin, and the inside resembles what I would think Godzilla looks like. It's a deep fried, crunchy goodness with a creamy center; a roll straight out of the pacific.
I plan on a return trip to try out the hot foods, from what I hear their fried rice is excellent.
